Great Tips for Ecommerce Site Design

by kimathic

ecommerce site designNowadays, ecommerce sites have become very important tools for facilitating online business. An ideal ecommerce design is not necessarily one that has advanced features, but one that is usable. When people visit your store site, they should be able to immediately figure out what you have to offer and find what they are looking for quickly.

The following are some tips which will help enhance the usability of your ecommerce site.

1. The homepage

The homepage is the most important page of any ecommerce site since it is usually the first place where visitors land. This page can therefore be very effective for displaying special offers or important announcements. The design of your homepage needs to be simple as well as clean. Avoid using fancy flash animations which might only end up annoying your visitors. Make sure that the most important information on your homepage appears in the area above the fold (can be visible without scrolling). This area can be used to showcase top sellers, special offers or discounts, featured products or new arrivals. To create a sense of urgency, you could use statements such as ‘Limited offer!’ or ‘One day to go!’ Remember to use bright colors and striking images in your web design so as to grab the attention of visitors.

2. Header, footer and sidebar

The frame of a website is comprised of the header, footer and sidebar. These three areas can be very useful for the navigation, branding and usability of your ecommerce site. Here are a few of the features which usually appear in these areas.

Header

  • Name, tagline and logo for your store
  • Search box
  • A link to ‘My Account’ where applicable
  • A link to the shopping cart
  • A navigation bar which contains links to pages such as ‘contact us’, product categories, ‘about us’ and FAQs
  • A link to the checkout

Footer

  • Security and privacy logos
  • Copyright message
  • Extra links to shopping cart, checkout and my account
  • Links to important pages such as terms and conditions, privacy policy, as well as shipping and return policy

Sidebar

  • Search box
  • A link to product pages which are categorized in terms of price or brand
  • Search box
  • An opt-in box for joining the email list
  • Links to specific pages such as new arrivals, top sellers, current promotions and featured products

3. Product pages

An effective ecommerce design is one that places emphasis on the product pages. Having well built product pages will enhance your chances of making more sales. Such pages need to be as brief as possible and to the point. Use catchy images and words to convince potential customers to take action. It would be advisable to stick to the conventional ecommerce design where the product description appears on the right, and the image on the left. This is important since most visitors intuitively scan a web page from left to right. Make sure the main description and image appears above the fold. Display a number of high quality product images showing the product from different angles. Your descriptions need to be short and precise, offering vital details such as the different sizes and colors available. Finally, you need to ensure that your call to action button appears prominently on all the product pages.
